Serco to Provide Fire and Rescue at EDF Hinkley Point C Site

Company News, Health, Safety & Environment, Health, Safety, Security & Environment, EMEA
Serco has been awarded a contract by EDF Energy to provide fire and rescue services during the construction phase of Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station. The Service will start on 1 October 2018 and has a total contract value of approximately £6.5 million over six years.

As a result of the contract award, Serco sees opportunities for new apprenticeships which will benefit local employment and will use this model to recruit new fire fighters through the contract duration.

Serco already runs a range of fire services in the UK and the award winning International Fire Training Centre and has significant experience of delivering fire services.   We will be able to draw upon our existing operations as the largest fire services contractor on UK military airfields, and the provider of aviation and industrial fire training to 80% of UK civil airfields and to air forces around the world. Serco will also be able to offer EDF Energy reach-back and wider skills from across the Group and draw upon the resilience skills of the Emergency Planning College

Commenting on the award, Michael Robertson (Head of Health, Safety & Environment) at HPC said: ”Serco came up with an innovative and cost effective solution to our needs and we are looking forward to working with them during this important and challenging project.”

Ronnie Coutts, Serco’s Capability Director, Fire said; “Serco is delighted that we are going to be supporting the HPC Construction Site with fire and rescue services during the complex build phase of Hinkley Point C. We have world class skills, expertise and experience in the provision of fire services and we will be able to deploy a highly skilled team to help HPC prepare for and respond to a range of scenarios.”

Serco’s delivery model is designed to focus on HPC’s current and future needs. This approach recognises the changing operating environment as the HPC power station transitions from construction towards its commissioning phase.

As a result of the award, the workforce of approximately 22 employees will transfer under the UK's Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) regulations (TUPE) to Serco following completion of the appropriate consultation process.
