Compass Beats Schools Nutrition Deadline
Compass Group subsidiary Chartwells has reduced the sugar content in menus at its portfolio of primary school contracts by 20 per cent, in advance of a 2020 Public Health England (PHE) deadline for education sector caterers.
PHE, an executive agency of the United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care, included the target for children aged up to 18 in its Sugar Reduction Progress Report 2018 which is part of a wider government programme aimed at tackling childhood obesity.
Chartwells reports it has achieved the target by introducing new meal options and re-formulating dessert menus in 1,700 primary schools within its portfolio after working in partnership with local authorities.
New school menu choices include deserts with 50 per cent fruit content, as well as offerings that are free of 14 ingredients listed as allergens by the European Union.
The company announces wide support for the move from parents included in a ‘We’re All Ears’ survey.
Commenting, Richard Taylor, Chartwells’ managing director, said:
“We take our responsibility as a food provider to children extremely seriously. Childhood obesity is on the increase, therefore reducing sugars in our lunchtime menus is a positive step to making a difference. Education about healthy eating is important too, which is why we launched Beyond the Chartwells Kitchen, which helps young people, teachers and communities tackle issues like childhood obesity, mental health and lack of exercise.”
