A Game Changer for Our Railways

Costain and Bryden Wood Technology will work alongside other winners of a collaborative research and development competition delivered by Innovate UK for Network Rail to explore the potential of smart technology to transform the construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure.

The grant is part of a wider collaboration involving projects headed by Graffica, PEAN Technologies and Plume Rail to implement new technologies with the potential of shortening the design of routes and railway infrastructure elements (including track, power supply, signalling systems and bridges) from several months to just days.

Atish Chauhan, a project manager with Network Rail, says:

“Using automated design will help Network Rail with producing better designs faster and support our long-term service planning by allowing better assumptions about future infrastructure and associated changes to services.”

Kelvin Davies, innovation lead for Rail at Innovate UK adds:

“By bringing together firms large and small, we can maximise the potential for innovation and strengthen the supply chain. We look forward to seeing the benefits offered to Network Rail in developing new and innovative capability for automated infrastructure design”.
