Volunteers Help Boy to Make Home Safe
A team of Kier volunteers have joined other volunteers in transforming the family home of a six-year-old boy who suffers with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a severe degenerative disease that causes muscle weakness.
The housing improvement project for six year-old William saw volunteers transform his family home inĀ CodicoteĀ into a space that will allow him to move around safely.
Alongside the volunteer workforce, Kier has donated a wide range of materials and equipment to the build including specialist project management advice, machinery and new bifold doors for the finished extension which is due to be complete in November.
Helen Redfern Kier Group HR director, who lives in William’s village, said:
“William is a wonderful little boy and after hearing about the improvements needed to his home, I wanted to help in any way I could.Ā Ā
āIt is wonderful to see the amazing support being given to the build and I look forward to following the progress as their new home starts to take shape.ā
Jo, Williamās mum added:
āHaving a house that William can fully access and live more independently in will not only make his life so much richer but that of our whole family. We cannot thank all those that have supported us enough, we are truly overwhelmed.ā
DMD is one of the most common fatal genetic disorders to affect children around the world. One in 3,500 boys is affected by the progressive and currently incurable disease.
