Synergising Multi-site Lone Worker Protection

FTSE 100 global corrugated packaging company Smurfit Kappa Group has unified lone worker protection across 19 United Kingdom sites with the help of ANT Telecom.

Wanting to streamline lone worker protection, Smurfit Kappa invited ANT (which had initially provided its Lone Worker Devices at 5 of the paper packaging solutions company’s sites in 2011), to recommend an enhanced solution that could protect workers at its other sites and ensure alerts reached the correct response teams whilst leaving a visible alarm audit trail.

ANT responded by presenting its Automated Incident Manager critical alarm management platform to the group – a solution that automatically distributes information from an alarm that has been triggered to designated local response teams, and escalates any alarm which is not acknowledged to ensure a timely response to incidents.

Nigel Elias, UK HSE Manager with Smurfit Kappa, says:

“The wellbeing of all of our staff is something we take very seriously and ensuring protection to our workers, especially when they are working alone, is integral. ANT Telecom’s lone worker devices have helped reassure our staff of their safety and give them confidence that should an incident occur, an alarm is triggered.

“Alerting selected responders for each location is key for a multi-site organisation such as ours and the hosted version of the solution was ideal due to its rapid deployment capability. The effectiveness of immediate alerts and scalability quickly prompted our decision to roll out the solution, along with lone worker Protector devices across 19 of our sites to implement a more effective and robust lone worker process across the group.

“Our workforce is not strictly comprised of lone workers, therefore a challenge for us was educating staff, that when they are working on their own they need to be protected should an incident occur. With ANT’s help and consultative approach, we have built awareness of lone worker safety across the company – something that has helped the business immensely to improve employee morale.”

As part of its support package, ANT is providing site-specific training and monitoring to ensure its solution is implemented as effectively as possible.

Klaus Allion, ANT Telecom managing director, says:

“We’re thrilled to be working with Smurfit Kappa in building a reliable and wide-scale solution across its sites to increase the health and safety of its lone workers. We have provided Smurfit Kappa with an overall solution that puts both lone workers and stakeholders’ minds at ease, knowing that should an alarm be activated the response time is rapid.”
