Extension of St George’s Hospital IFM Contract

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has extended its £150 million integrated facilities management (IFM) contract with Mitie to 2030 following a competitive tender process.

The contract which covers a range of services including cleaning, patient catering and facilities helpdesk services, will also include provision of waste management duties across the trust’s main campus in Tooting, South West London which serves over a million patients every year.

Mitie and St George’s have also committed to raising pay for Mitie staff to at least the London Living Wage of £10.55 an hour.

The contract also provides for the installation of new, easy-to-use digital touch screens which will enable hospital staff to place and monitor cleaning and catering requests and reduce time spent on traditional helpdesk activities. Additional planned enhancements include the introduction of an electronic catering system that will allow patients to view nutritional and allergen information when ordering meals and also monitor food wastage.

St George’s main campus already hosts an award-winning British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) training centre and Mitie has committed to developing a dedicated catering training centre to deliver courses to an equivalent standard.

Commenting on the contract award, Andrew Grimshaw, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Financial Officer at St George’s, said:

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with Mitie, whilst also looking at new and improved ways of delivering these vital support services for patients, staff, and the communities we serve.”

Jacinto Jesus, Director of Healthcare, Cleaning and Environmental Services at Mitie, said:

“Hospitals are challenging environments in which to deliver facilities management and we are proud to continue our partnership by extending our long-term relationship with St George’s Hospital. As well expanding our services to include waste management, we are investing in the latest technology as well staff recognition and development, to ensure service excellence in support of the critical work that hospital staff carry out every day.”
