Applying AI to Self-Checkout Kiosks
A partnership between Aramark and Palo-Alto based technology company Mashgin, is using computer vision to reduce queuing times for visitors using food and beverage kiosks.
Aramark has installed Mashgin kiosks which use artificial intelligence (AI) to provide computer vision that is capable of scanning multiple items without barcodes, simultaneously, at more than 60 locations – with 130 units in business dining, healthcare, higher education, and sports and entertainment sites the company serves.
The technology which is an integral part of the foodservice and facilities management group’s new “Walk Thru Bru” grab-and-go beverage market concept, is proving to be particularly popular with fans at major league baseball games, where it is being credited with reducing transaction times by up to 40 per cent and contributing to an increase in sales – even when additional time is allowed for ID verification for alcoholic beverage purchases.
Commenting on the innovative approach, Mike Giresi, Aramark’s senior vice president and chief digital information officer, said:
“We can offer even more convenient and personalized consumer experiences with new digital technology that is powered by artificial intelligence.
“Every application we build, based on AI, feeds data back into itself and provides us insights to be smarter not only about our operations, but also the needs and preferences of our clients and consumers.
“Mashgin technology continually learns food and beverage items and their prices offered at various locations, so a consumer can quickly pay and get on their way.”
