Sceptre Award for Axis
Axis Security’s team at Mercury Mall in Romford has been named ‘Security Team of the Year’ at the Sceptre Awards.
The annual awards celebrate best practices and people within the UK’s shopping centre industry and attract thousands of entries.
Mall manager, Spencer Hawken, credits the Axis team with maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for its elderly demographic and teenagers visiting at the weekend. “The Mercury security team is a welcoming presence in Romford”, he says. “As knife crime moves East from London into our quiet suburb, we need to be vigilantly creating a safe environment.
“Thanks to our team’s dedication, we have been able to avoid the problems suffered by neighbouring areas.
“In addition to traditional security duties, the team takes an active role in our community. Officers have helped to set up and run a quarterly gaming league for teenagers, giving the officers an opportunity to show that they are approachable, that they are a friend, and not a threat to this vulnerable demographic.”
Since 2018, the number of reported incidents of anti-social behaviour on the site have fallen by 19 per cent, with the number of recorded assaults falling even more significantly by 47 per cent.
Innovations introduced by the team have included customer service, autism awareness and dementia training which, Spencer says, have resulted in the site receiving an autism friendly award and “undoubtedly contributes to the security team being the town’s most approachable and visible centre security team.”
The shopping centre also reports tenants are appreciative of the security team’s active approach in supporting the wider community, with managers sitting on town ‘crime’ consortiums and working closely with the borough council’s ‘Safe and Sound’ initiative to improve security links.
David Mundell, Axis Security managing director, adds:
“We have a highly professional and approachable team who are delighted to see their hard work recognised and held up as the best in the shopping centre industry.
“Their ongoing contribution to the community and approach to zero tolerance on anti-social behaviour is making a real difference to the people who visit and work in the shopping centre.”
