Collaboration Creates Innovative Recycled Paint

A team of chemists at Dulux Trade working in partnership with Veolia have produced a ground-breaking matt emulsion (latex) paint formulated from 35 per cent recycled materials.

The new Evolve product line is manufactured from unused white paint from tins at Veolia’s recycling centres to reduce the carbon footprint of each litre of manufactured paint by more than 10 per cent.

Veolia collects paint deposited by residents at their household waste recycling centres and takes it to its remanufacturing plant. The paint is refined and filtered before being transported to a manufacturing facility where it is combined with new paint, re-engineered and tested extensively, ensuring that every tin on sale maintains the high standards expected of Dulux Trade.

Paul Murgett, Sustainability Lead at Dulux Trade, says:

“With over 700 million litres of paint being sold in the United Kingdom every year1, millions of litres of paint are going to waste.

“Evolve, developed as a result of years of investment, hard work and commitment to improve our sustainable offering, is the first step towards reducing this number.

“A dedicated team of experts have been working behind the scenes to develop this product – which is as quality driven as it is sustainable.

“By introducing Evolve, we will help to reduce the carbon footprint of our Dulux Trade products, and help our customers reach their sustainability goals too.”

Gavin Graveson, Executive Vice President for Veolia UK and Ireland, adds:

“How many of us have old tins of paint just taking up space in our sheds or cupboards? Now we have a solution where residents can bring us their paint and we can give it a new lease of life with Dulux Trade Evolve.

“We will continue to look for solutions to close the loop on products that otherwise were going to waste.”

Dulux Trade Evolve Matt has been five years in the making and has undergone rigorous testing – in addition to being subjected to blind testing by paint applicators and decorators. The product has also been subjected to successful, small scale, trials with the Co-op and Waitrose supermarkets.

Evolve is currently available in white only.
