Miele Hosts Sustainability Immersion Day

Miele encouraged staff to become more environmentally friendly by inviting them to make pledges at a recent ‘sustainability immersion day’ in Oxford.

Staff pledges ranged from sharing lifts to work; eating less meat; and buying non disposable nappies. Miele has promised to plant trees in support of all the staff pledges made.

During the immersion day, staff from both the domestic and professional team were brought up to speed on Miele’s commitment to become the ‘the most sustainable company in the industry.’ Miele’s 2019 Sustainability Report was unveiled to the team and staff were also briefed on all the latest innovations and initiatives from the organisation, including details on how it is working with McDonalds on grease and fat extraction for use as biofuel and its zero waste to landfill intiative, which sees all waste traced and accounted for.

Sustainable practices have always been at the core of each part of its manufacturing process. Energy labels offer just a brief snapshot of how energy efficient Miele’s appliances really are; Miele considers the supply chain, recyclability and packaging.

In its fridges, Miele looks at efficiency during use and incorporates programmes that help food stay fresher for longer to help reduce waste. And, in washing machines and dishwashers it uses systems to prevent overdosing in a wash cycle helping clothes and dishes last longer. As little as six litres of water are used per dishwashing cycle, whereas to do the equivalent load by hand, typically 30-80 litres of water would be used. Miele’s heat pump tumble dryers feature a maintenance-free heat exchanger so they remain as energy efficient after 20 years as they are on day one.

John Pickering, managing director at Miele GB said: “Customers are expecting more from their partners and suppliers, and rightly so.

“Since Miele first launched in 1899, the core of its product and business philosophy has been to provide customers with products of exceptionally high quality and with a long lifecycle and minimal environmental impact. Sustainability has always been at the core of everything we do. Our ‘Immer Besser’ (forever better) philosophy means we strive to constantly improve, and our approach to sustainability is no exception.”

The Miele Sustainability Report 2019 details the organisation’s plans for sustainability across management & processes; products & services; supply chain & production; and employees & society. It also includes information on Miele’s membership of the UN Global Compact since 2004 and the 17 sustainable development goals that the UN set out in 2015. The report also discusses Miele’s agreement to uphold the Paris Agreement, limiting global warming to less than two degrees and its participation in the TextileMission initiative.
