Playing a Vital Role in a Hospital Refurbishment
Concrete repair systems from Sika have been used during the refurbishment of The University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, County Durham, England.
Plant rooms, operating theatres and recovery rooms at the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton-on-Tees were in need of renovation due to a prevalence of cracking and spalling in the structure’s concrete surface as a result of low cover carbonation. Due to the specialist nature of the medical work being carried out in some of the areas involved, repairs had to be completed as rapidly as possible, and with as little disruption to hospital staff, patients and their families.
The hospital’s repair programme, which began in October 2019, was carried out by CSC Services UK. It covered an area totalling 1,000 sq.m and involved contractors working in wintery conditions and at weekends in order to complete the project to the two-month deadline agreed with client, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.
Initial repairs involved applying Sika’s FerroGard-903+ mixed corrosion inhibitor which is formulated from organic compounds and designed for use as an impregnation of steel-reinforced concrete. Spray-applied and developed to penetrate concrete and form a protective monomolecular layer on the surface of the reinforcing steel, the product delays the corrosive process. The exposed steel reinforcement was applied with the company’s MonoTop-610 high-performance, one-component cementitious polymer-modified primer which provides anti-corrosive bonding and is used as an alternative to high-build concrete repair mortar.
The smoothing coat for the repairs utilised SikaMonoTop-620, a one-component cementitious polymer modified mortar; with a product from the manufacturer’s Aquaprimer line used as the adhesion promoting primer for a waterborne elastomeric coating with anti-carbonation properties.
The concrete repair aspect of the refurbishment project, described by Mark Lemon, CSC Services’ managing director as “an extremely high-profile project”, was completed in ten weeks.
