Bringing Food Education into the Home

A team from Compass Group schools catering subsidiary Chartwells is working with CBBC celebrity Chef and Leon co-founder, Allegra McEvedy MBE, to create interactive cook-along videos to entertain children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supplementing the new video content on YouTube is a bank of supporting materials, including recipe cards (trending recipes include ‘Unicorn Hummus’ and ‘Pea Pond Slime’), and a “self-care” challenge which gives children something to aim for each day to support with home schooling.

McEvedy says: “Engaging children and young adults in cooking, and showing them how much fun they can have in the kitchen is my absolute driver in life. We will help fill these long days of lockdown with some light educational messages about where food comes from, seasonality and nutrition….all against the backdrop of making some fun and yummy recipes. We are Open for Business with a menu that’s got something for everyone.”

Charlie Brown, Chartwells managing director, adds:”During these unprecedented times, our teams wanted to support the young people we serve every day. We’ve used our expertise to offer some inspiration, alongside education and we really hope this goes some way to helping the people we work with.”

Chartwells also provides dedicated health and wellbeing information to young people, children and communities through its ‘Beyond the Chartwells Kitchen’ programme which aims to help tackle childhood obesity, mental ill health and lack of exercise.
