AWE Loses UK Nuclear Warhead Management Contract

The UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) has announced it will be bringing the management, operations and maintenance of Britain’s nuclear stockpile in-house.

In 2000, AWE Management Limited (AWE ML) – a consortium formed by Lockheed Martin (51 per cent), Jacobs (24.5%) and Serco Group (24.5 per cent), was awarded the management and operations contract for the facility with the remit of managing the employees, contracts and assets of associated with Britain’s nuclear stockpile for the MoD.

According to a regulatory announcement by Serco, the MoD informed shareholders in AWE ML subsidiary, AWE plc o Friday, that the entity controlling the Atomic Weapons Establishment will transfer back under direct UK government control from 30th June 2021.

Serco forecasts activities from its involvement with AWE will make a contribution to 2020 underlying trading profits after tax of around £17 million this year.
