Coveted ANCC Recognition for Ben Taub Hospital

Ben Taub Hospital in Houston has become the second hospital operated by Harris Health System to achieve Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

In September, the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, which is also owned by the State of Texas’ public healthcare organization, underwent an identical assessment involving input from staff and its leadership team in the preparation of an electronic application, and inspections of written patient care documentation, and on-site surveys.

Healthcare organizations that achieve Magnet designation are required to apply for re-designation every four years.

Dr Matthew Schlueter, Ben Taub’s chief nursing officer, comments: “Obtaining Magnet was only made possible by many years of hard work from every member of the entire hospital.  It’s an interdisciplinary award that reflects an excellent environment for nurses to practice in, and, most importantly, being able to provide high quality patient care.

“Of critical importance was the support of our board of trustees and our executive administration.”

“Magnet recognition is a tremendous honor and reflects Harris Health System and our staff’s commitment to delivering the highest quality care to our patients,” adds Maureen Padilla, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, executive vice president and chief nursing executive for Harris Health System. “To earn this recognition underscores the strong foundation of excellence and values that drive our professional nursing team to strive harder each day to meet the healthcare needs of all the residents of Harris County.

“The achievement is more than something to brag about, it demonstrates to our nursing staff that our organization recognizes their invaluable potential to lead healthcare innovation and improvements.”

Dr. Nathan Deal, executive vice president and administrator of Ben Taub Hospital, comments: “Magnet designation assures and demonstrates to our patients, families and our community that our nurses are of the highest caliber and that quality at Ben Taub greatly exceeds national benchmarks.

“It validates our world class nursing staff and formally puts us in an elite category of peers who have achieved the designation.”

According to ANCC studies, Magnet-recognized hospitals deliver higher patient satisfaction scores, lower mortality rates, lower incidence of hospital-acquired conditions and better nurse-to-patient ratios. Designation also signals to patients, their families, current and potential employees and the public that hospitals are following best practices in professional nursing, and focusing on data-driven outcomes and values nurses.

Only nine per cent of registered hospitals in the United States have achieved the designation.
