Making Sustainability Child’s Play

The eco-friendly BioBall and ReNewToys series from Italian toymaker Mondo provide a simple, fun and direct way to teach respect for the environment.

One of the biggest challenges facing us today is the impact of man-made materials on the environment, with up to 95 per cent of waste in our oceans (including the Mediterranean Sea) identified as originating from plastic.

Inspired by the opportunity of creating a lasting impression in children’s minds about the need to preserve the environment, the new toy series have been launched in the belief children are the best advocates of any major shifts in how we treat our planet, and can play an active role in developing an eco-friendly future.

BioBall is the only ball made with a new bio-based formula, which replaces 50 per cent of fossil-derived substances with a renewable sourced plant derivative. The new formula not only makes it the first green ball, but also contributes to improving its flexibility and, consequently, its playability. Available in many varieties, the product has been certified “OK Bio-Based” by TÜV Austria, the leading European organic certification body.

Mondo’s ReNewToys is a set of beach play accessories (including buckets, rakes, spades and more) that is manufactured from recycled materials which originate in the pre-consumer food chain. Food grade plastics cannot contain dyes or other additives deemed harmful to humans, and their use enhances the chemical safety of the toys which are suitable for toddlers. The offering is perfect for playing outdoors and learning to play while taking care of our coastlines.

Mondo is investing heavily in research and development and committing itself proactively to substitute plastic materials with environmentally sustainable options across its manufacturing sites globally.

The toy manufacturer has also launched a new corporate sustainability policy which sets serious environmental sustainability goals aimed at reducing waste and reusing it as raw material, as well as improving the energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A company spokesperson says Mondo is communicating its respect for nature through its product choices with the objective of “helping the children of today become the environmentally aware adults of tomorrow”.
