Serco has commenced delivery of a range of specialist support services at RAF Brize Norton under a three-year £40 million contract announced by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in July.

The number of people employed at the air base is expected to more than double as new services are introduced to add to existing roles the company has been providing  since 1997.

Commenting on the formal completion of the Transition period and Serco beginning to deliver against the contract, Group Captain Emily Flynn OBE ADC, RAF Brize Norton Station Commander, said: “As we come to the key operational transition period of the Brize Support Contract, the work of the Joint MOD-Serco Transition team has built the foundations for the ongoing successful delivery of RAF Brize Norton’s output and continues to build on the long-standing relationship between Serco and the Station.”

Paul McCarter, managing director of Serco’s Defence business, added: “Serco is excited to be starting this new phase of delivery at the RAF Brize Norton Support Contract.  We have provided vital support services at Brize for 24 years and understand the critical role that the base plays for the UK Armed Forces.  It is an honour to work alongside the armed forces and we are very proud of the role that our team plays as part of RAF Brize Norton Whole Force, particularly during times of high operational tempo.”

‘Brize’ is the Main Operating Base for the RAF’s entire air transport and air-to-air refuelling fleets and is the largest station in the Royal Air Force. During the Covid-19 pandemic, service delivery at the Station has required significant levels of operational flexibility, agility and innovation to maintain operational levels whilst following government guidelines on keeping people safe.

The contract was awarded following a competitive process, and includes an option for extension by up to a further period of two 1-year contracts – extending its total potential value to around £65 million.

Scope of Contract

The new contract will see Serco introduce specialist services at RAF Brize Norton Brize, including airfield services, additional engineering, transport, fuels, logistics, cargo/freight movements, fitness instructors and administration.

Services already provided by Serco at the base include RAMP services, engineering, security, IT support services, photography and transportation.
