Today marks World FM Day, a celebration of the Facilities Management (FM) profession and its accomplishments. The annual event unites the global FM community under a common theme, and this year’s theme is “Making a Real Difference.”
The FM industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, with sustainability, resilience, and corporate responsibility taking center stage. In light of these changes, industry leaders share their insights on the significance of World FM Day and the importance of making a real difference.

John Carrillo CFM, IFMA Fellow and Chairman, Global FM, believes the contribution of facilities managers deserves widespread recognition. He says: “Today is World FM Day, and we would like to thank you for your selfless service to the worldwide FM Community.
“Your unprecedented adaptability, collaboration, and steadfast commitment have contributed significantly to the safety and development of workplace strategies for all those who depend on the built environment.

Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, who has issued a proclamation officially recognizing World FM Day in the state’s calendar at the request of the Houston-based International Facility Managers Association (IFMA), echoes many of Carrillo sentiments, when he says: “Recognizing that facility management makes the world a better place, professional organizations such as the International Facility Management Association set standards of excellence, provide opportunities for continued education, and celebrate the many contributions that facility management professionals make to our society.
“Each year, a day is set aside in order to shed light on our facility management professionals. Today and hereafter, I encourage all Texans to learn more about this critical profession and to express appreciation for those who devote themselves to it.
“Our facility management professionals ensure safety and security in the present while paving the way for an even brighter future, and they therefore represent the best of the Lone Star State.”
First proposed by the Global Facility Management Association (Global FM), the date of World FM Day is the second Wednesday of May each year.
Celebrations are taking place under the auspices of several national professional associations, many of which are also organising activities to promote a better public understanding of facilities management as a profession.
