Liverpool Welcomes Eurovision with Record-breaking Drone Show

Liverpool’s Eurovision Song Contest 2023 Opening Ceremony featured a spectacular drone show, marking the largest single-location display of its kind in the UK.
Celestial, in collaboration with the National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome, orchestrated a mesmerising performance with 624 drones taking flight. The event was further elevated by a captivating rendition of the 2014 winning anthem, ‘Rise Like a Phoenix,’ delivered by Eurovision icon Conchita Wurst.

The record-breaking drone display comprised two awe-inspiring 4-minute shows, showcasing Celestial’s expertise in bringing giant drone art to life. The formations included Ukraine’s national bird, the White Stork, and Liverpool’s symbolic mythical creature, the Liver Bird. The drones gracefully spelled out “Liverpool Loves Ukraine” in the sky before morphing into a stunning 100-ft wide representation of the Liver Bird.
A staggering crowd of over 25,000 people gathered at St George’s Hall to witness the 90-minute concert, which featured performances by music legends such as The Lightning Seeds, Atomic Kitten, The Real Thing, and a special reunion performance by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
John Hopkins, Founder & CCO of Celestial, expressed his enthusiasm for the drone show, stating, “Our Eurovision drone show celebrates Liverpool, music, and, of course, Ukraine, the previous winners of the contest. Designing this show was a fantastic opportunity to bring unique expressions of harmony and togetherness over the skies of this incredible city. It perfectly embodies Celestial’s mission of uniting people with a shared sense of wonder.”
The Opening Ceremony, aired at 6:30 PM on Monday, May 8th, was televised and isnow available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
