The Port of Quebec (French: Port de Quebec) holds a significant place in the maritime history of Quebec City, Canada. As the oldest port in Quebec, after the Port of Montreal, it has played a pivotal role in the development of both the city and the nation since its establishment in the early 17th century. Operated by the Quebec Port Authority and owned by the Government of Canada, the port witnessed its peak in the 19th century when it ranked among the world’s most vital ports. Over 1,600 ships and nearly 25,000 sailors passed through its waters in 1863, driving substantial growth in the shipbuilding industry in Quebec City.
Shifting Tides in the 20th Century
The 20th century brought changes to the Port of Quebec, as dredging activities in the Saint Lawrence River, between Quebec City and Montreal, led to the relocation of major port activities upstream. In modern times, cruise traffic has taken precedence over the former freight traffic, transforming the port’s landscape.

A Call for Strengthening
In the summer of 2019, Jhon Páez, Senior Structural Engineer Ports, Marine, and Coastal of WSP Global Inc, an esteemed international engineering practice, approached Cintec with a critical requirement.
The firm sought vertical strengthening solutions for two areas of Quai 5-14N of the Port of Quebec. The objective was to reinforce the structural integrity using anchors composed of 1 1/4″ diameter, #30M 2205 stainless steel reinforcing bars, each with an overall length ranging from 25 to 30 feet (7.5M to 9M). Precise installation involved placing 48 anchors fitted with a 4-inch (100 mm) sock using a crane in drilled cored holes of matching diameter, securing them firmly with Presstec© grout injection.
Preserving the Heritage, Building the Future
Through the collaboration between Cintec and WSP Global Inc, the Port of Quebec was fortified for the future, ensuring its continued significance in Canada’s maritime landscape.

The careful execution of vertical strengthening measures at Quai 5-14N emphasizes the port’s commitment to maintain its historical legacy while adapting to the changing tides of modernity.
