UK delivered and venue catering specialist Grazing will be donating the value of 20,000 ‘Magic Breakfasts’ to feed vulnerable children this Christmas in lieu of distributing gifts and cards among employees.

The donation is part of a 12 month fundraising campaign by the caterer on behalf of Magic Breakfast, which has seen 10 breakfasts donated to feed children at risk of starting the day hungry in the UK, for every breakfast order received by Grazing in 2023.

Following the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis, low-income families and their children have been hit extremely hard in recent years and an estimated four million children (almost a third of the UK’s child population) are at risk of starting the day hungry, a figure thathas risen by over 1.4 million since April 2022.

A hungry child cannot concentrate, putting them in danger of missing out on crucial learning each day. By the end of primary school, persistently disadvantaged children are 12 months of learning behind their wealthier peers.

Magic Breakfast was set up to address this problem, providingfilling, nutritious breakfasts to more than 200,000 UK children. Year 2 pupils in Magic Breakfast schools made, on average, an additional two months’ progress in reading, writing, and maths over the course of a year than children with no breakfast provision.

Meanwhile, Pro-Bono Economics found that for every £1 invested in Magic Breakfast, £50 was generated for the economy through increased lifetime earnings and reduced public service costs.

Sam Hurst, Grazing CEO, says: “We have a long-standing tradition of making a charity donation each Christmas instead of giving each other presents and cards within the office and this festive season it’ll be to Magic Breakfast, which we’ve been fundraising for across the year. It’s a cause that’s really close to our hearts.

“As a food business we believe everyone should have access to delicious, healthy food, especially children, and it’s our responsibility to do what we can as a business to help combat child hunger.”
