Training Berths for Trinity House Officer Cadets

Listen to this article

A partnership between Serco and Trinity House, the official authority for lighthouses in England and Wales, is providing Officer Cadets with training berths aboard vessels operated by the support services provider.

Serco operates, supports, and maintains ships and small craft at more than 30 locations worldwide, from small support boats to the newest generation of icebreakers and the most complex submarines.  In the UK, the group operates and maintains a fleet of 96 vessels, which enable the Royal Navy to operate safely and efficiently, in and out of port, proudly ensuring Royal Navy readiness since 1996.

This is a real opportunity for Trinity House’s cadets to gain very specialist seagoing experience and training with Serco, which will benefit them enormously professionally.

Just Be Maritime Ltd has arranged for two MNSS cadets from Trinity House’s Merchant Navy Scholarship Scheme (MNSS) to join the support vessel SD Victoria for a training deployment.

SD Victoria is primarily used to support military training and exercises as part of Serco’s contract with the UK Ministry of Defence.  During their time aboard, the Officer Cadets will be undertaking a range of activities and tasks as part of completing their MNTB Training Record Books, including vessel familiarisation, maintenance work and watchkeeping duties.

Guy Barker, Serco’s Maritime Services Director, says: “Serco is delighted to be working with Trinity House to provide opportunities within the maritime industry.  Serco has been providing support to the Royal Navy for over 27 years, operating and maintaining a fleet of 96 vessels to ensure Royal Navy readiness and safe and efficient operations.  It is a privilege to be able to share that opportunity with the next generation of British seafarers.”

Stuart Benge, Operations Director for Just Be Maritime, adds, “This is a real opportunity for Trinity House’s cadets to gain very specialist seagoing experience and training with Serco, which will benefit them enormously professionally.”
