A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ASHRAE and the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) formalises initiatives to implement globally recognised standards for sustainable building design and operations across all six Gulf Cooperation Member countries and the Yemen.
The terms of the MoU include the following objectives:
- Promoting communication, cooperation, and exchange of information about standardization and related activities.
- Providing opportunities to participate in and comment on proposed standards, technical regulations, and guidelines.
- Cooperating on organising seminars, workshops, conferences, joint awareness programs, and symposia on public policy and mutual issues.
- Promoting joint research in areas where research results will add to the body of knowledge in fields of mutual interests; and
- Harmonising both organisations’ standards relating to HVAC and heat pumps.
Additional areas for cooperation are also outlined, including development of new standards, technical regulations, methods for assessing conformity, research into building performance and the collation of statistics.
The MoU with ASHRAE will support the establishment of cooperative and constructive working relationships, as well as improved communication and coordination in many areas of mutual interest, and will also contribute positively to the objective previously stated by GCC Member States and the GSO of ‘advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment’; with a focus on building systems, and promoting energy efficiency, indoor air quality and sustainability within the industry.
H.E. Engineer Nawaf Al Mana, GSO President, comments “This collaboration represents a significant step towards integrating and harmonising our standardisation activities.”
Ginger Scoggins, P.E., ASHRAE Fellow and President for 2023-24, adds: “ASHRAE is delighted to partner with GSO in our shared commitment to fostering a more sustainable global built environment and driving technical innovation.
“By adopting common positions at international levels, we aim to benefit global trade, consumers, and building occupants worldwide.”
