Company News, Catering, EMEA, Talent, Service Provider News

Holly Langan, an apprentice with The Ritz London, has been presented with a ‘Purple Umbrella' award by Brian Turner CBE and Adele Oxberry, managing director of Umbrella Training, at a high-profile ceremony in London.

Langan who is a member of the 5-star hotel's hospitality team, was one of six major award winners selected by Umbrella Training which offers apprenticeship and employment opportunities to those looking for a career in hospitality. Award categories included include chef apprentice of the year, hospitality team member apprentice of the year, hospitality supervisor apprentice of the year, hospitality manager apprentice of the year, and alumni apprentice of the year.

Marking the end of National Apprenticeship Week in the United Kingdom, the awards were presented to talented chefs, team members, supervisors and managers for their commitment to lifelong learning and their achievements during the last 12 to 18 months.

Now in their third year, the Purple Umbrella awards provide an opportunity for leading luxury hotels brands, restaurants and foodservice management companies to recognise their most talented apprentices at a time when trade association, UK Hospitality, believes there is scope for the creation of a further 200,000 new apprenticeships within the hospitality sector over the next fiver years.

Speaking at the event, Oxberry said:

"Holly brings a cheer and spark to all she does. Not only does she want to continually learn she also provides support and encouragement to her colleagues – an amazing attribute in a young person. She also has identified areas of improvement which have been implemented and have proved to be successful with The Ritz London."

The other five major award-winners were:

• Chef Apprentice of the year – Esther Smith from BaxterStorey

• Hospitality Team Member Apprentice of the year – Damian Szczotka from Red Carnation Hotels
